Author. An acclaimed mystery writer, he penned over fifty novels during his three-decade career. He received the Edgar Allan Poe Award for "A Cold Red Sunrise" in 1989 and was named Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America in 2006. Born Stuart Melvin Kaminsky in Chicago into a Jewish family, he was educated at the University of Illinois where he attained his bachelor's degree. He later received a doctorate from Northwestern's School of Speech. He taught a film, television and radio course at Northwestern University and wrote books on such Hollywood notables as Clint Eastwood, Gary Cooper, John Huston and Don Siegel. Kaminsky also contributed to the screenplay for the 1984 motion picture "Once Upon a Time in America." Among his novel series includes "Toby Peters," beginning with "Bullet for a Star" (1977), "Inspector Rostnikov," "Abe Lieberman" and "Lew Fonseca." He died from complications of hepatitis.
