Dale Conger Wright, 86, of Kearney died Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at Mount Carmel Home Keens Memorial. Dale was born Dec. 25, 1925, in Elm Creek to Allen A. and Cora M. (Conger) Wright.

On April 20, 1947, he married Frances E. Steele in Kearney. She preceded him in death.

Survivors are sons, Stephen and his wife, Colleen Wright of San Jose, Calif., Thomas and his wife, Sylvia Wright of Grand Island, and Kim and his wife, Sue Wright and David Wright all of Kearney; daughter, Barbara Hodges and her husband, Mike, of Lexington; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Iva Griem of Kearney and Elva Hasbrouck of Yuma, Colo. and a host of relatives and friends.

Dale grew up and attended school in Elm Creek. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps on March 1, 1944, and was honorably discharged March 18, 1946. He saw active duty in the Pacific Theater, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands and Saipan. Dale was decorated with the Purple Heart Award for injuries received in action at Saipan, Marianas Islands, on Nov. 15, 1944.

After his return home after active service, he married his sweetheart, Frances. They made their first homes in Seattle, then Chicago, and returned to Nebraska in 1953.

Dale was the hardest-working man you'd ever meet, subjecting himself to all weather conditions. There wasn't a piece of heavy machinery he couldn't operate.

His pastimes included gardening, hunting, fishing and carpentry.

In addition to his wife of 56 years, he was preceded in death by:parents; son, Sanford; four brothers; and five sisters.

Military honors will be conducted at the funeral home by the U.S. Marine Corp Honors Team in conjunction with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 759 and American Legion Post 52. Private family burial was at the Prairie Home Cemetery, Holdrege, NE.
