Rev. John Edwin Darby was born in Somerset, now Wicomico County, Maryland, November 9, 1840. He departed this life at the home of his daughter Mrs. Grace (Lewis )Fellers, in Table Rock, November 21, 1922, at the age of 82 year, 12 days. He has gone to live with the Savior who he loved and served with a beautiful devotion for a long lifetime.
He lived what he taught---a pure, clean life, a life filled with mercy, charity and loving-kindness to all mankind.
Converted at the age of 18, he joined the Methodist Protestant church and was licensed to preach in the very county and district in which he was born.
On December 28, 1869, Mr. Darby was united in marriage to Miss Lottie Bremerman, of Georgetown, District of Columbia, with who he lived happily for 53 years, and who untiringly aided him in all the good works which he undertook, but on August 7, 1922, she laid down her work here and passed to her reward but only preceded him by 3 months and 14 days.
Mr. and Mrs. Darby were the parents of eight children:
Fred, who died in infancy; Grace, wife of Lewis Fellers of Table Rock; Carl, who passed away at the age of 25, leaving two sons, both of whom enlisted in the late war (WWI). Anna, wife of George Burgert, of Hiawatha, Kansas; Ray, of Lexington, Nebraska; George, of Pleasanton, Nebraska; and Ross, who died in infancy.
There are 22 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Darby and his faithful wife served many charges, winning the respect of people wherever they went.
We take these words from a review of his life written by himself on his birthday November 9, 1922.
"I have preached the gospel since 1864 in ten different states. Have preached in seventeen counties in Nebraska. Have always loved to preach above anything I have ever done. Had I my days to live over again I would preach the gospel of Christ. This is all. Someone else can fill this out when I have gone. I hope to die in the triumph of faith, so goodbye to all till we meet in that morning. " J. E. Darby
Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. A. P. Vannice of York, Nebraska in the Presbyterian church where Father Darby worshipped for many years, after which his body was laid away beside that of Mother Darby, who preceded him such a short time. A beautiful life has
passed.
Weeping? But why?
Not for that calm, sweet face with veiled eyes---
You would not waken him to toil and strife
To suffer moral woes and care again?
‘Tis good to die.
Weep not for him
Weep for the living, If you needs must weep,
For them who groping still along the way,
Of tangled life, falter and faint and fall (fail?)
And yet must struggle on to patient day
Through twilight dim.
