Born in Chatham Co, NC, Joseph ws the 5th of 21 chldren of martha Shurd Boon and John Polk Clegg His Polk ancestors came to America from Ireland in 1659 and his Clegg ancestors came from England in 1685. Joseph married Martha McGill in 1844 and they came to Texas in 1849. Their children were Mary, John H. Martha Harris and Melissa Annie Sawyer. After his wife's death, Joseph wed Gracie Medford about 1859. Nancy "Cat" Farley Tucker and James Thomas were born before her death in 1863 at Stepehville. Later that year Joseph married Lucy Forest Harris and they had 10 children rearing 5 to adulthood: Lucy Lee Crosby, Molinda Doran, Joseph Frank, Mollie Leddy and Pearl Barry. Joseph ws a farmer and blacksmith who at one time shod horses for the Texas Rangers. In Bell Co he owned a cotton gin, after financial reverses Joseph and Lucy moved to Buffalo Gap in 1879 then Fisher Co (Near Hobbs) in 1881. In 1882 he planted 2 acres of cotton from seed brought from Bell Co and harvested over one half bale per acrea. This was thought to be the first cotton grown in Fisher Co. In 1888, they filed on land in Longhorn Valley 6 miles northeast of this site. On July 18, 1889, Joseph died of a heart attack and was buried on the farm. After Cottonwood Cemetery was established in 1890, his body was moved to this site. Lucy died and was buried beside him in 1920.
