MRS. BENNETT PAYNE

This estimable lady died at the family residence in Jackson township last Saturday, of asthma, at the age of 82 years. Funeral occurred Sunday afternoon, interment at McCullough cemetery.

Mrs. Ellen Payne was born in Hawkins county, Tenn., in 1825, and was one of sixteen children born to William McCullough and wife. When three years of age her parents came to Indiana and settled in Putnam county, just east of Poland. In 1848 she was married to Bennett Payne. They immediately came to Clay county and settled in Jackson township. Nine children were born to them, two of whom died. The seven children who survive are E. G., Albert, Mrs. Sarah Dalrymple, G. S., Nancy, Walter and Mrs. Rachael Wright, all of this county. All are married except Nancy, who still lives on the farm. Of the brothers and sisters of the deceased, eight are still living, who are Mrs.Highly Modesitt, Alexander McCullough, William, James McCullough, of Putnam county, Francis McCullough, of Oregon, Newton McCullough of Arkansas, Joseph McCullough, of Putnam county, and Mrs. Malinda Johnson. -- July 22, 1897
