~OBITUARY OF KARL RUF

Karl RUF was born December 13, 1899 in Lehigh, Kansas, to Fred and Anna(Kelln) RUF about a year after the family came to the United States from the Ukrainian area of Russia. He passed away peacefully to his rest September 03, 1999, in Shattuck at the age of 99 years, 8 months and 21 days.

He married Laura BENDER in Arnett January 09, 1922. Three boys and seven girls were born to this couple, Elsie, Bernice, Caroline, Iva Nette, Lu Etta, Anna Marie, Donald Gilbert, Freddie Charles, Karl Jr., Laura Lea and Bonita Jane.

His wife Laura passed away September 13, 1958. Three of his children, Elsie, Caroline, and Donald Gilbert preceded him in death, as well as his parents, four brothers and five sisters. His second wife, Ella Steinle KOOP, passed away in 1982 in Fairbury, Nebraska.

He is survived by seven children twenty-six grandchildren, forty-three great-grandchildren s well as two sisters, Minnie BARTEL of Walla Walla, Washington, and Hannah DEAL of Harrah. There are also many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

After living in Kansas for about three years the Fred RUF family heard about free land to be homesteaded in northwest Oklahoma. They put all their belongings in a wooden freight car and traveled on the Santa Fe railroad to an area southwest of Shattuck and claimed a quarter section of land on which the new village of Holstein was soon established. The railroad was later moved from west of the home to further east and the Santa Fe officials renamed the town to New Goodwin.

Karl received his elementary education in the Goodwin area schools but he attended the German Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary in Clinton, Missouri, for his secondary work. While he was at Clinton he was presented the school's highest award for his excellence in penmanship and composition.

In 1922 he married Laura BENDER in Arnett and they settled on a farm a couple of miles south of Goodwin. In 1930 they purchased land northwest of Dalhart, Texas. They lived there with their four little girls in a half dugout that Karl built. Because of the depression and drought their hopes soon turned to years of poverty and grief.

In 1934 they returned to the Shattuck area where he worked at various jobs and sold M. M. machinery to support his family. In 1938 they moved to the RUF home place near Goodwin. He farmed there until he retired and moved to Shattuck. Here he and Karl Jr., operated a small engine repair shop until 1981.

He was a life-long member of the Seventh-day Adventist church. He spent many hours helping build the Shattuck Church School. Five of his children and sever grandchildren attended this school.

He always enjoyed visiting with people and never met a stranger. Karl liked to take drives through the country-side to see friends and reminisce about the "good old days". He was always ready to discuss the crop and cattle situations.

Graveside services were conducted Thursday, September 09, 1999, at 9:30 a.m. from the Seventh-day Adventist cemetery in Shattuck.
