Howard Austin McMurray, 80, of Pocatello, Idaho, passed away May 9, 2001, at his home of lung cancer.

He was born April 2, 1921, in Liberty, Bear Lake, Idaho, to George V. and Nellie (Austin) McMurray. He attended schools in Liberty and Paris.

He married Virl Bentsen February 24, 1940, in Randolph, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah Temple on December 12, 1955. After their marriage, they made their home in Montpelier, Idaho, for the next 31 years.

During World War II, Howard served in the United States Army from January 1945, and received an honorable discharge from the service in October 1946.

He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 44 years as a signal man, brake man and conductor. Howard also served as secretary for the UTU for a 10-year period. He was a state legislative director for the UTU for 13 years. During his service in Boise he made many friends throughout the state of Idaho, and was able to help pass many different kinds of legislation that affected the men he represented.

In the fall of 1972, Howard and Virl moved to Pocatello, Idaho, where they had resided for the past 29 years, and where he continued his employment with the Union Pacific Railroad.

At the time of his death, Howard was an active member of the high priest quorum in the Indian Hills 30th Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During his life he served as ward genealogist, and as a counselor in two bishoprics.

Howard loved the out-of-doors. He loved fishing, hunting, camping and gardening. He was well-known for his Dutch-oven dinners. After his retirement, he and his wife, Virl, traveled to Yuma, Arizona, and enjoyed the warm winters there. It was in Yuma that Dad took up tole painting. You can find many of his tole painting creations in his backyard.

Howard is survived by his wife, Virl, of Pocatello; and four daughters, Linda Nelson, Orem, Utah, LaRae (Dick) Hansen, Pocatello, Shelley (Brent) Hyldahl, Pocatello, and Krista (Ed) Hammond, Sandy, Utah. He is also survived by a foster daughter, Delilah (John) Paul, Chicago, Illinois; 20 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bertha Hansen, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Donna Pay (his best friend while growing up), Bountiful, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Warren McMurray, and sister, Ina King.

A special thanks to hospice for their kind and gentle care for Dad, especially Rod, Robyn, Karen, Lori, Mardene, Janese and Bobbi.

Should friends desire to make donations in Howard's name, they may be sent to the Cancer Society of Idaho, Attn.: Martha Tweety, P.O. Box 1145, Blackfoot, Idaho 83221, or to Southeast Idaho Hospice.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2001, in the Indian Hills 30th Ward, with Bishop David Nye officiating.
