Rev. Perkins, clergyman and educator, was ordained in the fall of 1933 as a Congregational minister at Regent, ND. He served churches in OH, NY, MA, AZ, and TX until 1950. He studied at Duke University, where he was awarded a PhD in Christian Thought. He taught at Wake Forest College, University of Oregon at Eugene, OR, and Trinity College at San Antonio, TX, and was Professor and Chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Huston-Tillotson College until he retired in 1970. He was awarded a MDiv from Vanderbilt University, Oberlin Graduate School of Theology, where he had earned his BDiv. In 1932 he moved to Vanderbilt. He was committed to the cause of civil rights and considered his teaching to be a service toward goals of social equality and justice.
