Mrs. Ella Jenkins Wilkins, 88, of 1828 Zion Road, Morganton, passed away at her residence on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, following an extended illness. She was born Jan. 21, 1921, in Burke County to the late Cornelius Young Jenkins and the late Addie Caroline Bristol Jenkins. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James Alonzo Wilkins and brothers, George W. Jenkins, James Henderson Jenkins, John Anderson Jenkins, Tossie Edward Jenkins, and Lewis Pinkney Jenkins; and sisters, Mary Lou Wilson Jenkins, and Annie Belle Fullwood Thomas Jenkins. She was a member of Israel Chapel AME Church where she served as a steward, vice-president of the Smith-Berry Women's Missionary Society, communion steward and former trustee. She retired from employment with Valdese Hospital after working 22 years as a nurse aide. She was formerly a Hospice Volunteer. Survivors include her son, James Arlen (Jimmie Lee) Wilkins Sr. of Lenoir; daughter, Katherine Louise Jackson of Gastonia; 14 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and cherished friends. Funeral services arrangements are scheduled to be held at Israel Chapel AME Church at 2 p.m. Monday with the Revs. Phyllis Caldwell, Herbert Carter, Kenneth Falls and Frances Tate officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 1:55 p.m. at the church prior to the services. Burial will follow services at Israel Chapel AME Church Cemetery.
