John Phillip Newsom
(August 23, 1942 - October 7, 2009)

John Phillip Newsom, 67, passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at his daughter's home in Mesa after a valiant struggle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his mother, Avonell; his seven children, Deborah (Westan) Hargis, Chandra (David) Bair, Jeanine, Laura (Aaron) Nielson, John (Leila), Amberlee, and Jared; and ten grandchildren.

John was born on August 23, 1942 in Columbus, Indiana to Lawrence J. and Avonell (Lykins) Newsom. He moved with his parents to Phoenix, Arizona when he was ten. From 1961 to 1964 he served an honorable mission to Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon his return, John received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Latin American Studies in 1967 and a Master of Arts degree in Spanish Literature in 1968, both from Arizona State University.

In 1971, he married his eternal sweetheart, Patricia K. Paxman, in the Salt Lake Temple, and they enjoyed 38 happy years together. The family lived first in Phoenix and Glendale, and then moved to Douglas, Tucson, Pinetop, and finally Snowflake, Arizona. John spent most of his career in banking; he also worked for non-profit organizations and in real estate.

After retirement, he thoroughly enjoyed his missionary work at the local Bishop's Storehouse. He was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association and an avid target shooter, an enthusiasm he shared with his family on countless outings.

He is a devoted husband and father who always put his family first. He is well known for his lively sense of humor, friendly nature, talent for teaching and storytelling, and memorable writings. His annual Christmas letters were fondly anticipated by friends and family far and wide.

His overwhelmingly successful goal was to make everyone he met smile. John was a faithful and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his life, serving in many different capacities, including bishop and Boy Scout leader.

His testimony, faith, and love for God continue to be an example and motivation to all who know him.

A memorial service and viewing were held at the Snowflake LDS Stake Center on Monday, October 12, 2009 at 1 PM in addition to a visitation on Sunday, October 11, 2009 from 6 to 8 PM at the Silver Creek Mortuary in Taylor.

Donations to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund, an effort John supported, are appreciated.
