Esther was born on the kitchen table of her Aunt Mary's home near 22 & Coulter Street in Chicago, Illinois.
His older brother was James McCambridge.
Esther was a 1941 graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and had graduate work at The Art Institute of Chicago, University of Illinois at Chicago and Northwestern Illinois University.
Esther taught school for 49 years and was a school principal for the last 5 years before retirement. Her last 30+ years were for school District #124 in Evergreen park, Illinois. Upon retirement, she was awarded a plaque recognizing her tenure from President George Bush (Sr).
She married Leland Thomas Montgomery in Chicago,Illinois at the former Brookline Presbyterian Church and honeymooned at the former Edgewater Beach Hotel. They settled on the far south side of Chicago in the Beverly Hills neighborhood.
They had 4 children:
