Kara went by both Whitehead and Cooper, but since his father left when he was two weeks old, he usually preferred the name of Cooper, as did his children. His grandmother Minta Anthony Cooper came to live with him and his mother in 1905. He was charged with the responsibility of looking after her since she was in her late years. In a family history, one of the descendants tells about her "marked physical strength and independence", adding an anecdote about her disappearing from the house one day. Kara called and called and searched for her, finally finding her high up in an apple tree shaking down apples!

In 1919, Kara married Lou Emaline Payne Marine Cooper, the daughter of Samuel Payne of Graham County, NC. Her first husband Leonard Marine had been killed in WWI. Kara was the father of Hoyt Roy Cooper (04-16-1920), Alvin Montgomery Cooper (2-04-1922), Ernest Clay Cooper (04-11-1925), Jay Cooper (06-23-1927), and stepson Hanley Leonard Marine (10-07-1918).
