Mary Jane John Hawkley was born in Guiliaden, Mathry Parish, Pembroke, South Wales. She was 5 years old when she, her parents Thomas and Margaret Thomas John, and seven siblings immigrated to the U.S. in May 1861 leaving behind one sister, Phoebe John. Phoebe remained in Wales marrying James Frederick Cusworth in 1865 and eventually settled in England until her death in 1872.

She married Joseph Brigham Hawkley on 13 Nov 1871 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had eleven children: Margaret (m. Joseph Hyrum), Daniel (m. Mary Ellen Perrett), William (m. Margaret Ann Clark), Levi (m. Mary E. Stanger), Joseph Brigham Jr. (m. Esther Summer), Sara Emma (m. Edwin Edgley), Hyrum, Zina Violet (m. Thomas Greaves Rowland), Mary Regina (m. William P. Whitaker), Cornelia, and Myrtle (m. Carlos Daniels Jones).
