Harvey R. Tinsley, age Eighty-four, Was in Hardware Business Fifty-Eight years
Crawfordsville, Indiana, September 23, - Harvey R. Tinsley, age eighty-four, pioneer hardware merchant of Crawfordsville, retiring April 1, 1925, after having been continuously engaged in the retail hardware business here for fifty-eight years died today. Mr. Tinsley was born in Ireland, coming to America with his parents and settling in Cincinnati when he was only eight years old. As a young man, Mr. Tinsley clerked in a hardware store in Cincinnati. He enlisted from Cincinnati in the 74th Ohio regiment of infantry in 1862 and served throughout the remainder of the civil war. Indianapolis News, September 23, 1926 Mr. Tinsley came to Crawfordsville October 31, 1866, and was employed as a clerk in the store of Campbell, Galey & Harter, early merchants of Crawfordsville. Later he became a member of the firm Archibald Martin, a prominent resident of Crawfordsville bought the interests of Mr. Tinsley's partners in 1872 and the firm continued for a quarter of a century. When Mr. Martin retired the firm became H.R. Tinsley & Co., Mr. Tinsley's son joining the firm. Mr. Tinsley was a member of the McPherson Post of the G.A.R. in this city, and was affiliated with the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian church. Mrs. Tinsley, who died in 1894, was Miss Elizabeth Dunn, daughter of Dr. W.P. Donn, of Frankfort. Mr. Tinsley's second marriage was to Harriet McKee in 1898. Her death occurred in 1919. He is survived by seven children by his first marriage: William Tinsley, of Kansas City; Campbell, John and Robert H. Tinsley, who are now in the firm of H.R. Tinsley & Co.; Misses Marie and Janette, who live at home, and Fred Tinsley, of Louisville. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Saturday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. M.V. Oggel, pastor of the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian church.
