Born Mary Ruth Blizzard, Ruth was raised in New Albany, Mississippi, as her family moved there from Myrtle when she was young. She graduated from New Albany High School, Sunflower Junior College in Moorhead, and Blue Mountain College. With the winds of war blowing, in about 1940, this small-town Mississippi girl left the comforts of home and moved to Washington, D.C., where she found employment with the Federal Government, and housing in a rooming house for women. She soon afterward convinced both her older sister, Edwina, and her younger sister Jean, to join her there. Meanwhile, her college sweetheart, Ray, was learning skills as a pilot for the US Navy. When he was assigned as an instructor at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, they decided to get married. In Dec. 1942, Ray traveled to Washington where they were married on Dec. 12. Ruth then moved to Pensacola to be with Ray until 1944, when he shipped out to the South Pacific. After the war, she and Ray moved to Jackson, and in 1957, to Birmingham. She was a hard-working homemaker and mother who volunteered in her church and community, and was loved by many.
