Elizabeth Joan McCarty, age 93, of Sparta passed away at Edison Christian Health Center in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. Joan was born May 3, 1929, to Leona (Van Hassel) and Gregorius (Gore) Braspenninx of Ravenna, Michigan. A 1947 graduate of Ravenna High School, Joan worked at Sears Roebuck in Muskegon until the following spring, when Jim and Lulah McCarty hired her to work at McCarty's General Store. On June 27, 1948, she met their son, Leon. Over the next four months, she and Leon fell in love, and they married on October 22, 1948. From 1950 to 1959, they were blessed with six daughters, June, Joy, Lori, Amy, Cindi, and Sally and were phenomenal parents for 90 and 93 years. Joan was involved in a variety of activities. She and Leon were Farm Bureau members for fifty years. While living in the Ravenna area, she was active in United Methodist Women, PTA, and Moorland Fire Department's Auxiliary. Later in life, she was active in Sparta Senior Neighbors and the Harvest Way Community. She enjoyed writing letters, poetry, and short stories; quilting and other sewing; and visiting relatives, friends, and neighbors. Surviving Joan are four of her favorite daughters, June (Carl) Schutter, Joy (Jeff) Balasko, Amy McCarty, and Sally (Dennis) Rynberg; son-in-law, Raymond Maleski; 13 adored grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Sara Maul, Ruth (Frank) Knapp, Clayton (Gretchen) Schutter, Erin (David) Medendorp, Wesley (Vicki) Maleski, Monica (Jeremy) Maleski, Mary (David) Bradshaw, Robert Maleski, Matthew (Courtney) Maleski, Christopher (Heidi) Rynberg, Adam (Audrey) Rynberg, Jason (Kelly) Rynberg, Lisa (David) Hoppe; 17 cherished great-grandchildren, three precious great-great-grandchildren, and several treasured step great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were Joan's parents, Gore and Leona Braspenninx; her siblings and their spouses, Peter and Joan Braspenninx, Mona and Tom Courtade, Jack and Shirley Braspenninx, and Mary Louise and Marvin Miller; her two other favorite daughters, Lori Maleski and Cynthia Gibson; son-in-law, Joe Gibson; great-grandson, Parker Maleski; two nieces, Diane Barnum, Janet Pursley, her nephew Scott Braspenninx; and her most beloved, trusted friend and husband of 71 years, Leon James McCarty. The family will receive visitors at The Ravenna Chapel of Sytsema Funeral and Cremation Services, 3570 Thomas St., Ravenna, MI 49451 (231) 853-6511 from 6-8 PM Friday, March 3, 2023. A funeral service will be held at the same location the following day at 2:00 PM, March 4, 2023, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
