Benjamin served in Company A 2nd Minnesota Infantry during the Civil War

The Chatfield Democrat Jan. 15, 1887

Died, at his home in Chatfield,' Friday
evening, January 7, 1887, Mr. Benjamin
Farrington, aged 81.
Mr. Farrington was born in Otisfield,
Cumberland county, Maine, in 1806. A
portion of his early life was spent at
Andover, Mass., but the greater por
tion of it, previous his removal to the
West, was spent in Harrison, Maine. He
was for several years engaged in the
tanning business, and another considerable
part of it in the shoe-making business.
He was twice married the first time to
Miss Anna Jackson, of Naples, Maine,
and had, previous to his coming to Minnesota,
six children, two of whom are
now living in Minnesota, his son, Mr. I.
P. Farrington, living at Denver, Rock
county, Minnesota.
After his removal to this state in 1856,
he was chiefly engaged in farming.
In 1861 he enlisted at Chatfield in
Company A, Second Minnesota regiment
under Capt. L. Ober, and went with his
comrades to the scene of hostilities in
the South, following the fortunes his
regiment, sharing in its conflicts, its
marches and its hardships, and bearing
his part as became a true soldier. He
was honorably discharged from the service
Oct. 4, 1865, and returned to his
home in Chatfield the same year.
He became a member of E. L.- Kenney
post May 14, 1884. In 1882 he was
granted a pension of $6 per month, for
disabilities received in the service, which
was subsequently raised to $10. By the
help of this and by cultivating the land
on which he has since resided, he has
supported himself and family in comfort.
In the spring of 1875 he was again
married to Mrs. Susan C. Merrill, and by
that marriage has one daughter, Susie,
now in her ninth year. His remains
were taken in charge by the comrades of
E. L. Kenney post, G. A. R.. of this
place, and the burial services under their
auspices were appropriate, solemn and
impressive. The large attendance at the
funeral, notwithstanding the cold weather,
was a sufficient testimonial of the respect
in which he was held by his fellow citizens
as well as his fellow soldiers.
