Photo of Maj. John Wesley Pitts given to me many years ago by his granddaughter, Mrs. Ada Rountree, Mobile. According to Maj. Pitts' granddaughter Ada Rountree, his first wife died during the Civil War and was "buried in the yard" by slaves who took care of the children until his return but did not know how to contact him or tell him of his wife's death, which evidences there was no contact with Pitts relatives during that period. Actually she was buried in the nearby Bailey-Singleton Cemetery, which had several graves from the 1840s-50s. His second wife Caroline was the daughter of Giles Chapman Pitts, marshal of Talladega during the Civil War and first cousin of my great-great-grandfather John Moore Pitts.
