Ivan H. Parker was the County Recorder for many years. Before that he was the publisher of the Colfax Sentinel.
In the book, "Auburn A Century Of Memories" John Robinson told this story:
They had a rally up in Dutch Flat, and Parker went up there representing the Colfax Sentinel, and another fellow nemed Henry Diskie from Colfax went up there with him. The hotel, I should say, one of the hotels, not the one that's there now, was right alongside of the depot, and the trains all stopped there to take on water and fuel. Parker and Diskie had gone over to the rally, which was just a little ways across town, and when the rally was over, they went back over to the hotel and got a room. Parker said the beds were full of bed bugs and he was not going to stay there another minute and be eaten alive by the bugs, so he dressed and went down to the depot, which was right alongside the hotel, and he caught a light engine which he knew was going to stop in Colfax because they had a roundhouse there.
Diskie stayed there, and a freight train came by and loaded up with water and it exploded. the explosion took out part of the hotel and killed two or three people. Henry Diskie's back was broken, but he was not killed. He was brought down on a stretcher in a baggage car to Colfax. He was met by some friends of his and they took him home.
Since Parker was a newspaper man, they put this story in the San Francisco papers. They called it down to the paper there by telephone, and the San Francisco paper showed a picture of "Ivan H. Parker, the man whose live was saved by a bed bug, because he would not stay and be eaten alive!" Page 18
