He joined the Confederacy on 7 Jan 1862. Trained at Galveston, transferred to Arkansas, his group was captured and taken to Douglas, IL. Held there for three months and released. Later served in Georgia and wounded at the battle of Jonesboro, he was in the hospital for two months. Afterwards he served with Robert E. Lee in the 5-day fight around Richmond.
