Fred Was born in the heart of Indian Territory before Oklahoma was formed as a state. His parents were pioneers and moved around quite a bit when he was young. The small family left Oklahoma and moved to Arizona, then New Mexico and finally on to Kansas. After his mother's death, when Fred was just six years old, he went to live with cousins in West Virginia. Several months passed and his father brought him back home where he worked on the farm in Ford County, Kansas. Fred always disliked farming and at the age of 18 he joined the Army. He served in WWI and WWII attaining the rank of First Sgt. before receiving a medical discharge in 1944.

After leaving the Army he worked as a security guard at one of the shipyards in Tampa for many years.

Fred was a member of the VFW in Tampa.

Fred married three times and was widowed twice. He had no children.
