CAL YOUTH'S TRAGIC END (King City Rustler, Oct. 1953)
Gerry Foletta Killed on Lonely Road By Auto.
Gerald Foletta, son of Mr. and Mrs. Silvy Foletta of San Ardo, was buried Tuesday morning from St. John's Catholic Church. The 18 year-old University of California sophomore was instantly killed early Saturday morning when he was struck down by an automobile while walking along a lonely road near Berkely.
The tragic deaath of young Foletta was the indirect result of the traditional fraternity initiation stunt. Gerald, along with four other Sigma Pi pledges, was driven into the country and let out of the car on the Ygnaio Valley road, close to Walnut Creek in Contra Costa count. The boys were to find their way back to Berkeley.
They commenced walking up the road, arms linked together, enjoying fa frolic. Suddenly an auto dipped over a low hill behind them and smashed Foletta and another boy to the roadbed. It was 2:10 a. m.
Foletta was killed immediately and the other youth, Theodore Glasnow, 25, of San Francisco suffered severe injuries.
Gerald Foletta was an honor student at King City high school where he graduated with the class of 1949. He had been president of his junior class and active in 4-H work. He was attending Cal on the American Legion Scholarship.
He was born in Paso Robles in 1934 and his early schooling was at San Ardo.
Besides his parents he is survived by three brothers, Gordon of the U. S. Navy, Wayne and Silvy Jr. He also leaves his grandparents, Mr and Mrs. Albert E. Bassi, and Mrs. John B Foletta of San Ardo.
Aside from the 25 members of his fraternity, many other young friends of Gerald Foletta attended the funeral and expressed sympathy to the parents and regret at the loss of a popular friend.
Pallbearers were; Marcel, Albert and Tony Miranda, Harold and Edwin Lombardi, Hugo Chiapponi, John Ansberry, Jim Anderson, and Pascal and Bernie Pryor Jr.
