Son of John and Mary Ann McLary McCoy. He was the youngest of seven children.

Lute was a farmer and a member of the Methodist Church. He was first married to Alice Crowdy. They were the parents of Nellie, Sam and Joseph Earl. Alice died in 1914. She is buried in Bear Creek, but there is no stone.

He married Millie Collins in 1924 and they were the parents of Olive, Mary, John and Floyd.
