Quincy Whig Dubuque Iowa 4/13/1869 Baltimore, April 12-On Saturday evening at Jarrettsville, Hartford county, Miss Cairns shot and killed Nicholas McComas. About twenty persons were seated on the porch of the village hotel, when Miss Cairns suddenly appeared, drew a pistol and fired three shots at McComas. The alleged cause of the murder was seduction.
Miss Martha J. Cairnes, daughter of the late George Cairnes and sister of Mr. George R. Carines, Secretary of the Harford Fire Insurance Company, died on Tuesday morning May 23d, at the residence of Mr. J. Wilson Galbreath, near Jarrettsville. Miss Cairnes was ill with consumption and was visiting at Mr. Galbreath's when she died. She was buried yesterday at Bethel Presbyterian Church. (Aegis & Intelligencer, May 26, 1893, p. 3)
She was acquited of the murder of Nicholas McComas because her defense said she had the right to defend herself.
