The Chronicle

Ruth Emily (Johnson) Hahn went home to her Lord Jesus on Mother's Day, May 8, 2005. She was born on March 23, 1912, in Omak to Charles and Elizabeth Johnson. Ruth's dad died when she was 6 years old. Her mother never remarried and raised their 6 children at the family orchard on Pogue Flat near Omak. They were poor but deeply loved and never realized they weren't well off!
After high school, she worked at Frank's Motors and then for Washington Water Power in Okanogan as a bookkeeper. She told of how at that time "the Water Power" was the only place one could buy electrical appliances in all of Okanogan County.
She married her dear, Willis Hahn, on June 25, 1933. After a few moves they bought a lot at 329 S. Douglas in Omak and built the home in which they raised their 3 girls. Willis operated Hahn Sign Company from this location until he retired and Ruth kept the books for their business. Ruth lived in that house for nearly 60 years, moving to Wenatchee to be near her daughter, Rosalyn, in 2001.
After her family was raised, Ruth started a new career as a remedial reading teacher's aide. She took many classes to improve her skills and was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. In working with her students, she created innovative lessons tailored to each child's unique learning style. She loved them and they loved her.
Ruth sewed beautiful clothes for her girls and was known for her sponge cake and cinnamon rolls at the church potlucks and bake sales. In her 60s and 70s, she even cooked on a wood stove for the church summer camp at Lost Lake. She was always willing to help those in need. We well remember her caring for our elderly neighbors, the Yarwoods, checking on them during the day and making dinner enough each night for her own family and the Yarwoods. She was a steadfast Christian and a faithful member of the Trinity Lutheran Church from her youth.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Rosalyn Purdom, and husband, Roger, of Wenatchee; daughter, Carolyn Treese, of Santa Barbara, CA; 5 grandsons: Tony Purdom, E. Wenatchee; Jacob Purdom and wife, Lani, of Everett; Rick Treese of Santa Barbara, CA.; Jeff Frantz of Malaga; Mike Frantz and wife, Jen, of Wenatchee; and, 3 great-grandchildren: Shea and Will Frantz of Wenatchee and Regan Purdom of Everett.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis; one daughter, Sheila; infant son, Charles; 2 brothers and 3 sisters; and son-in-law, Bill Treese.
