The son of Valentine and Mahala (Bennett) Nelson. He was one of nine children. Francis was married three times; first to Martha E. Owens. From this marriage six children were born. After the death of Martha, Francis married a second time to Margaret Pratt ( who died shortly after the marriage). His third marriage was to Emma Perin on January 15, 1923. At the time of the Civil War, he enlisted in the service of Co. K. 40th Regiment, Iowa Infantry.
