Funeral services were held Saturday, January 12, 2002, at 5 p.m. at First Baptist Church of
Gueydan for Charles Enos "Chuck" Alley, Jr., 86, of Gueydan.

Mr. Alley died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, in Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Lafayette. He was a grandson of the late Bob Crew of Wheeling, a Winn Parish pioneer, civic, and religious leader.

Mr. Alley is survived by his wife, Genevieve A. Alley of Gueydan; three daughters, Cheryl Howard of Greenwich, Conn., Floyce Reginato of Hedgeville, W. Va., Sondra Spense of Redding, Calif.; a stepson, Barney Leifeste of Fairfax, Va.; eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and one step-great grandchild. Local relatives include Linda and Gregg Davies of Winnfield, who attended the services; Cecil and Vernon Tilton of Wheeling, Frank Crew and Mabel Downs of Montgomery. Mr. Alley was a frequent visitor to Winn Parish.

A chemist, Mr. Alley worked as a chemical engineer and war aide to General Douglas MacArthur in Japan, where he was the first white man to climb Mount Fugiama in the winter. He later moved to Los Angeles, co-founded the Los Angeles Shooting Ranges, worked as an aerospace metallurgist, and taught adult education at night. At the time of his death, Mr. Alley was the world's oldest competitive aerobatics pilot and had received many national awards for his "stunt" piloting.

Mr. Alley was a member of Gueydan First Baptist Church, served as president of the Gueydan Museum and Cultural Arts Society, and was a member of the National Aerobatics Club. He was an active conservationist.

Funeral orations were presented by Mr. Alley's daughter, Floyce, and his son-in-law, Ron Howard, famed film and motion picture director who is best known for his role as "Opie" for many years on the Andy Griffith Show.
