Christopher Andrew Clarke passed away peacefully in Fresno following a two year battle with esophageal cancer.

He will be remembered for his irrepressible sense of humor, zest for life, and warmth. He was a voracious reader with broad interests and a thirst for knowledge and understanding. He was known for his sense of responsibility, willingness to volunteer, directness, honesty, and insightful resolutions to complex situations. He had an engaging personality and enriched the lives of all who knew him. His quick wit and infectious smile will be missed.

Chris was born in Janesville, Wisconsin to Norma Jo (White) and John Moore Clarke.

The family moved to California in 1958, where he attended schools in San Jose and Santa Cruz. At Santa Cruz High School his activities included being AFS Club President and Junior Class Vice President, wrestling, water polo, and track. Through AFS he spent 1973 in South Africa where he learned rugby and Afrikaans, graduating from SCHS in 1974.

Chris had an early and sustained interest in law enforcement and criminal justice. He earned an A.A. with Highest Honors in Humanities from Cabrillo College, Aptos and a B.S. with Great Distinction in Criminal Justice Administration from San Jose State University. At SJSU he completed the U.S. Marine Corps Platoon Leaders (Jr.) Class, Officer Training Program, receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Chris attended Monterey College of Law while also owning and operating the Paper Chase Process Service. In 1990, he received his Juris Doctorate and was admitted to the California Bar.

Chris made Fresno his home in 1991, where he married Carol Doyle of Santa Cruz and became a Defense Attorney in the Office of the Public Defender. In 2006, he became a Deputy District Attorney for Fresno County. Chris was a member of the California and Fresno Bar Associations, the Fresno Peace Officers Association, and a former member of Lions Clubs International.

Throughout his illness and treatment Chris was encouraged and deeply touched by the love and support of his friends.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Chris is survived by his wife Carol; son Peter; "adopted" daughter, Sage Somps; mother, Jo Smith; sisters, Catherine Abate and Diane Ayala; nephews, Zack, Nate and Mike; nieces, Jessica and Kim; and his faithful canine companions, Thistle and Ceilidh.

Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate Chris's life at the Dante Club, 6176 N Grantland Ave, Fresno, on Sunday, October 25, 2009, at 1:30 p.m.

Donations in his memory may be made to the American Society of Clinical Oncology (specify: Esophageal Cancer Research) or the SPCA.
