Washington, Dec. 18 – Mrs. Mary Tutt Throckmorton, who in her early life was a leader in society here, died today from the effects of inhaling illuminating gas which escaped by accident in her room. She was 83 years of age. In the beginning of Jackson’s term as president Mrs. Throckmorton, the Miss Tutt, made her debut in the executive mansion. Martin Van Buren was one of the young girl’s admirers and her reported engagement to him was one of the society rumors of the capital. Maj. Charles B. Throckmorton, retired, her only son, arrived here today from New York.
