He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

LCpl Hill died after an explosion near the main UK military base, Camp Bastion, in central Helmand province. A bomb had been planted near the entrance to the base's firing range a short distance away. Ten other soldiers were wounded.

Aged 23, from Redhill, Surrey. LCpl Hill started his military training in autumn 2005 and passed out in spring 2006. He conducted State Ceremonial duties in London District throughout the summer of 2006 before moving to the Mortar Platoon for exercises in South Africa in early 2007. He served his first deployment to Afghanistan as a senior mortarman in his section. In summer 2009 he qualified as a Joint Fires Coordinator and deployed on his second operational tour as a motor fire controller. Described as a personable, motivated and intelligent soldier with the most outstanding qualities, he was respected by his platoon mates and commanders. Friends remembered him as a excellent morale raiser and inspirational leader.

An only child, he was very close to his family. LCpl Hill is survived by his fiancée Anastasia Newman, his parents Brian and Claire, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral with full military honours was held on October 27, 2009 at St Matthew's Church, Station Road, Redhill.
