The Reverend Thomas Mathew Chambers, 78, died at St. Alexius Medical Center, Dec. 10, 1991 following a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Dec. 13 at the Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Most Rev. John F. Kinney the principal celebrant and the Rev. Paul Cervinski the homilist.

Interment will be next spring in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Father Chambers was born April 20, 1913 at Miles City, Montana, the son of William and Mary Chambers. His early schooling included Sacred Heart Elementary School, Miles City, and St. Mary's High School,New England, ND. His Education also included the Assumption Abbey School, Richardton, ND, from 1932 to 1934. He entered the Saint Paul Seminary, St. Paul, MN, to complete theological studies and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Bismarck by the Most Rev. Vincent J. Ryan on June 1, 1940.

Father Chamber's priestly assignments included administrative work at the diocesan chancery office and assistant pastor of the Church of St. Charles, Bowman; the Church of St. Mary, Bismarck; the Church of the Little Flower, Minot; the Church of St. Patrick, Dickinson; and the Church of St. Mary, Bismarck.

He also served in a number of pastoral appointments that included: the Church of St. Anthony, Van Hook; the Church of St. Joseph, Bowbells; the Church of St. Bridget, Parshall; the Church of St. Anthony, New Town; the Church of St. Thomas, Tioga; the Church of St. Joseph, Mandan; the Church of St. Boniface, Grenora; the Church of St. Jerome, Mohall; the Church of St. Henry, Regent; and the Church of St. Mary, South Heart.

Father Chambers retired in February 1986 and continued to provide priestly help-out service whenever needed. At the time of his death he was a resident of Emmaus Place, the priests' retirement complex in Bismarck.

Father Chambers is survived by three brothers, Edward, San Diego, CA, Robert, Needles, CA, and William, Petaluma, CA; and three married sisters, Catherine McNamara, Margaret Abrego and Patricia Gorjance, all residents of Seattle, WA.
