Several months ago the deceased was taken to a hospital in Terre Haute to undergo an operation for the removal of a cancer. The operation was thought to have been successful but shortly after her return home her condition began to grow worse and continued so until he death Wednesday.

The following obituary was read at the services:

Martha Howard was born in Sullivan Co., Nov. 30th, 1855. Died April 22, 1914, aged, 58 years, 4 months, and 22 days. She was the oldest daughtert of Ruel and Jane Howard. She received her education near home and gave her heart to God in early life, uniting with Indian Prairie church where she remained a constant member until death, always taking an active part in every service until her affliction. Even then she preached sermons each day, by her patience and loyalty to her master. The deceased was married to John Padgett Dec. 24, 1876. Two children were sent to bless their home.

Aunt Mat, as she was familiarly called was loved and respected by all who knew her as she always had a smile and a kind word for everybody. Even in her intense suffering she never forgot to ask about those in poor health or trouble. Her only worry of death was having to leave her loved ones. She often spole of the home beyond where there is no sickness, sorrow or parting. Mrs. Padgett was an ideal companion and mother and kind and generous friend and neighbor. Those who has the good fortune to visit her home will never forget the hospitality of the loved one whose place can never be filled.

She leaves to mourn her loss a devoted companion, two children, Mrs. Elmer Carrico, of this place and Claude, of Shelburn and a niece, Delcie Mounts, who had made her home with her since infancy, and five brothers, Tom Howard, of Texas, Jack of Bicknell, Ben, of Linton, J. W. of Pleasantville and William, of Carlisle. A sister, Mrs. Tom Mounts, having preceded her to her heavenly home.
