The son of Joseph & Agnes (Collins) Kline, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Wheeling, Wood County, (West) Virginia, and stood 5' 10" tall with light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted as a substitute for conscript Charles E. Jones and mustered into federal service at Charles Town, West Virginia, November 25, 1864, as a private with Co. C, 7th West Virginia Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company August 1, 1865.

He married Margaret Dillon and fathered Noah A. & Martha M. (b. 04/10/82 - Martha married Edward Sizemore), Omega May (b. 05/??/84), Lilly B. (b. 08/01/87 - married Daniel Grove), William A. (b. 10/19/88), James I. (b. ?), William A. (b. 10/19/87), Thomas D. (b. 04/08/89), Naomi (b. 04/??/90), Robert E. (b. 04/??/92), and Ulysses S. Grant (b. 09/??/94. In 1900, he was living in Alleghany County, Virginia, by 1910, in East Hanover Township, Dauphin County, in 1930, in Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County, and died in Shiremanstown. No Pennsylvania death certificate was found.
