Hugh Gene Ritchie, 67, of 1529 Hwy. 91, Elizabethton, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2009, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.

He was the son of the late John K. and Hattie Etta Love Ritchie and was a native of Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Mary Lou Ritchie Scott, Linda Ritchie Littleton and Bill L. Ritchie.

Mr. Ritchie was retired from Loyal American Insurance Company. He was also the owner and operator, with his wife, Joan, of A to Z Printing.

He was the former chairman of the Equalization Board; Chairman of the Board of First Utility District; a member of the supervisory committee of Happy Valley Credit Union; Watauga Lodge #622 F and AM; member of Stoney Creek Baptist Church, where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent, and he presently attended Hunter First Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Mr. Ritchie is survived by his wife, Joann Estep Ritchie, of the home; two brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Nancy Ritchie, Unicoi, Ernest "Gebe" and Lynice Ritchie, Elizabethton; his special companion, his dog, Little "D"; two uncles, Howard Love, and his wife, and Mary, Elizabethton, Hensel Johnson, Elizabethton; and a sister-in-law, Christine White, Elizabethton.

The funeral service for Mr. Ritchie will be conducted on Sunday, October 11, 2009, at 3:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton, with Dr. Kenneth Jordan, Rev. Grant Whittenbarger, Mr. Gerald Holly and Rev. Wayne Huff officiating. Music will be under the direction of Edwin Taylor and Kathy Norris.

The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM on Sunday prior to the service and at the residence at other times.

Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Steve Scott, Mike Scott, David Scott, Bart Ritchie, Doug Stevens, David Edwards, Rob Simpson and Donnie Slagle. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Fawaaz Hamati, Dr. Vipul Brahmbhatt, UHS Class of 1960, Lawrence Ritchie, Keith Bennett, Jack Love, Wayne Ritchie, Sam Q. Ritchie, Roger Lewis, Aubrey Ensor, Roy Livingston, Bobby Harding, J.C. Robinson, Terry Oliver, Frank Peters, Norman B. Peters, Robert Reginold, Ray Bolton, Jerry Liggett, Conway Hyder, Jim Hyder, Richard Grindstaff, Steve Shaffer, Richard "Jarfly" Dugger, Wayne Sams, Mike Ritchie, Ronnie Ritchie, Employees and Board Members of Happy Valley Credit Union, Mike Sellers, Dale Blevins and Kent Williams.
