Charles T. Pope Died in Findlay

Charles Tory Pope, 80, a long-time merchant and popular fraternal man of this city and a veteran of the Civil War, died this morning at five o'clock at his home in Findlay, No. 211 Allen Avenue, from heart trouble. [...]

Mr. Pope was born May 18, 1846, in Vermont. With his parents, Henry Putnam Pope and Miranda [sic] Pike Pope, he migrated to Ohio in 1847 and in 1853 the family settled on a farm by the Bell schoolhouse in Plain twp. Wood county. There he received his early education which was supplemented later by study in the Bowling Green schools. In 1867 he graduated from Eastman's Business College at Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

He served his country in 1864 and 1865 as a member of Co. C, 185th O.V.I. and of Co. K, 144th O.V.I. In 1873 he went to Minnesota. For four years he was deputy auditor and deputy recorder at Worthington, Minn., and he was appointed oil inspector of Southwestern Minnesota by the governor. He resigned and in 1887 returned to Bowling Green. Here for ten years he was engaged in the shoe and harnes [sic] business. While here he served the Odd Fellows at Noble Grand and for years as secretary. In 1906 he and his family to Findlay and there he engaged in the real estate and insurance business. In 1921 he was elected city auditory of Findlay and was reelected two years later. [....]

Mrs. Pope's first marriage was to Josephine Perkins. One daughter survives this union. She is Mrs. Erva (Leonard) Lehmkuhle of Toledo. Following her death, he was married in 1883 to Frances Thompson. She and two sons survive him. They are Henry Ray Pope, of Franklin, Pa., and Gay H. Pope, of Findlay. Another son, Donald T. Pope, preceded to the grave in March 1913.
