Cora Rose Hawkins: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Sun Herald (Biloxi, MS) - May 20, 2006
Deceased Name: Cora Rose Hawkins
Edward Hawkins was the baby of eight kids, and he was a bit of a tattletale
growing up.
But his mother, Cora Rose Hawkins would always look out for him.
"They were always doing something and I would always want to be telling my mom,"
Edward said. "I was just one of those kids who wanted to tell and my brothers
would want to kick the crap out of me. She stopped them from doing it, which I'm
grateful for."
His protector died suddenly of an aneurysm last Saturday. The Moss Point
resident was 59.
Visitation starts at 1 p.m. today at St. John Baptist Church in Moss Point, with
services two hours later and burial following at Biloxi City Cemetery.
Ms. Cora lived her life for her children, according to her youngest son. Her
father was a preacher, so she was a religious woman.
She also enjoyed her bingo, and Edward, 32, guessed she'd play four nights a
week when she could.
"She liked to smell pretty and had quite a few perfumes," Edward said. "She
loved to wear wigs. With my mother, you'd always see a different look."
His mom loved to work, and had been a housekeeper at Singing River
Rehabilitation Center for the last 6 1/2 years. She had the reputation for
joking with people there every day to keep their spirits up.
Some of that might have come from her experience around such environments in the
past. Barry Jackson, Edward's next older brother, lost his leg when he was 10.
Ms. Cora had to drive him back and forth between Gulfport and Jackson for at
least 18 months.
"That was a pretty hard time," Edward said. "She was a single mother raising
eight kids. She really held the family together."
