23-year old John served as a civilian guide and scout for Gen. John W. Geary of the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry; Geary was formerly a businessman in Loudoun County who knew John's father, mill owner James Downey of Taylorstown. John was killed in a rebel ambush in Fauquier County while guiding a squad of Michigan cavalry to Marshall to obtain a coffin. Gen. Geary arranged for John's body to be sent back to Lovettsville.
