Funeral Services for John Vechel Townsend, Sr., 72 year old well known Mena resident who died friday in Polk County Memorial Hospital, was held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Osborne White officiating. Interment was in Pinecrest Memorial Park under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. Casketbearers were Gene Sanders, Guliford Forbes, A. V. Adams, Wayne Harris, Herbert J. Brown and Bob Roberts. Mr. Townsend was born at Umpire, Howard County on August 27, 1897, his parents being the late Mr. and Mrs. Nelson C. Townsend. He was a member of the Mena First United Methodist Church and of the Umpire Masonic Lodge. Mr. Townsend was a retired farmer and stockman, and was a former Tax Assessor of Polk County. On February 16, 1919, he was married at Umpire to Miss Beulah Pinkerton, who survives him. A son, John Nelson Townsend preceded him in death on June 16, 1946. Besides his wife, Mr. Townsend is survived by one son, J. V. Townsend, Jr., Tyler, Texas; one daughter, Mrs. Aleen Stover, Crane, Texas; one sister Mrs. Richard Yarborough, Little Rock; and four grandchildren.
