George C. Potter, 88, of Macomb, Illinois, died peacefully in his home on October 7, 2009.

He was born June 22, 1921 near Avon, Illinois to Russell D. and Elva Belding Potter. He married Lucille Cox in 1945. She preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, Chris Potter, of Annapolis, Maryland; his daughter, Mary Potter, of Port Charlotte Florida; and two grandchildren, Anne and Alison Potter. Also surviving him are Lewis Potter of Avon, Illinois; Audrey Denholm of Tiskilwa, Illinois; and Paul Potter of Lena, Illinois. Two brothers, Arthur and Gary, and a sister, Martha Hoffmaster, preceded him in death.

He served in the infantry in World War II during 1942-5 in the South Pacific, earning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

He entered Western Illinois University in 1945, earning Bachelors and Masters degrees in 1948 and 1949, respectively. While a student he organized and operated the Veterans Service Bureau which administered the G. I. Bill. He joined the WIU faculty in 1949 and remained there until his retirement in 1987.

He received a PhD. from the University of Iowa in 1955. During the period 1957 to 1964 he organized and administered the WIU student teaching program, placing prospective teachers in schools in western Illinois, the Chicago area and eastern Iowa. With the formation of the College of Business, he taught Real Estate for the duration of his academic career. He was a charter member of the National Real Estate Education Association and served as the first president of the Association of Real Estate Educators. In 2001 he received the Alumni Achievement Award from WIU. He operated a real estate appraising firm in Macomb for 25 years and helped found the Lamoine Valley Board of Realtors, serving as its first president. Throughout his lifetime he enjoyed playing golf, tennis and bridge.

A visitation will be held at Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home in Macomb on Sunday, October 11, from 2:00-4:00 pm. A memorial service, followed by a reception, will be held at St. George's Episcopal Church in Macomb on Monday, October 12, at 1:00 pm.

Memorials may be made in his name to the Western Illinois University Foundation and will be used for scholarships.
