Frank Gibbons Dies; Retired Ottumwa Grocer

Thomas Francis (Frank) Gibbons, 78, long-time Ottumwa grocer and city clerk, died at 7 a.m. today at his home, 302 Burrhus street. He had been ill for almost 11 years.

Mr. Gibbons had operated a grocery store in the 900 block of Church street until the early 1940s when he entered city politics. He served as city clerk for six years through two administrations.

A native Ottumwan, Mr. Gibbons was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic church and a charter member of General Shields council No. 888, Knights of Columbus.

He was born June 18, 1881 in Ottumwa, the son of Thomas and Anna Gibbons.

His survivors include his wife, Mrs. Amy Gibbons; two sons, Donald of San Francisco, and Edd of Columbia, Mo.; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Brown of Minneapolis and Mrs. Harold Peters of Muscatine; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Whalen, Eureka, Ill., Mrs. C.W. Blount and Mrs. Vern Wilson, both of Ottumwa.

Twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

The body is at the Traul funeral home pending completion of service arrangements.

Funeral services for Thomas Francis (Frank) Gibbons, 78, who died Friday morning at his home at 502 Burrhus street, will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. in the Traul funeral home and at 9 a.m. in the St. Patrick's Catholic church.

A requiem high mass will be celebrated at the church, by the Rev. J.J. Collins, pastor.

Members of the St. Patrick's church and the General Shields Council No. 888 of the Knights of Columbus, will meet at 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home to recite the Rosary.

Burial will be in the Calvary cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Phil Horan, Martin O'Hara, Pat O'Gara, Leo Kapp, Joe Vance and Charles Canny.
