Malinda Duncan was born about 1814 in what is now Jackson County, OH (previously Ross County). It is suspected that she is the child of Mary Polly James and John Duncan; however, more research needs to be conducted before a definitive statement is made. Malinda had nine children and was stepmother to at least twenty-one others.

Malinda married David Radcliff Farney in Jackson County, OH, on February 28, 1833. The couple had eight children together and lived primarily in Kentucky. In the early 1850s Malinda and David divorced and Malinda returned to Jackson County, OH.

Malinda then married a widower, Wyatt Hammonds, on Christmas Day in 1854 in Jackson County, Ohio. The surname is also spelled as Hammons, Hannons and Hammond on various documents for Wyatt and his children. Wyatt's first wife was Rebecca Stewart. They had at least eight children together and moved from Virginia to Jackson County, Ohio, around 1850.

Malinda and Wyatt had at least one child, Andrew, born in 1856. Wyatt Hammond died between 1855 and 1860. In the 1860 census, Malinda Hammond is listed as the head of household (farmer), along with six of Wyatt's children, four of her Farney children, and their son, Andrew (age 4). Andrew is seen living with his mother and step-father, Isaac Helm in Illinois in the 1870 census.

Malinda married Isaac Helm on February 17, 1864, in Logan County, Illinois. Malinda's daughter, Amanda (with her family), was most likely living in the area at the time, which could explain how Malinda had relocated from Jackson County, Ohio, to Illinois. Isaac was also a widower. He was first married to Rebecca Mehaffey (at least ten children) and then a widow, Elizabeth Brady.
