----------------------
Fred C. Shilkus served as a private, 31st Signal Construction Bn, in World War II. HMT (Her Majesty's Transport) Rohna was sunk in the African Theater, Mediterranean Sea, by a guided missile launched from a German bomber the day after Thanksgiving. 1015 American soldiers died, including Fred, and there were 800 survivors. It was the largest military at-sea disaster and was not publically acknowledged for many years. In Tunisia there is a battle monument, and there is a memorial at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery in Seale, Alabama. Fred's son Frederick Christian "Rick", who took his mother's second husband's last name Lloyd, was a Viet Nam vet who helped his mother get a pension thru Fred Shilkus' service.
