ELLSWORTH A. MILLER

Ellworth Alver Miller was born October 2, 1919, the son of Chester A. Miller and Nina Ella Kenney Miller, on his parent's farm two miles southeast of Williamson, Iowa. He died Monday, July 21, 2008 at the hospital in Chariton, Iowa after a long struggle with cancer.

He attended grade school at Sunny Side School in English Township, three years of high school in Williamson and one year at the Chariton Community High School, graduating in 1937 with a special interest in vocational agriculture classes. After graduation, Ellsworth helped on his parent's farm for a few years.

He married W. Juanita Kendall on June 25, 1941 in Princeton, Missouri and for a short time they set up housekeeping in Des Moines. By 1942 they had returned to Lucas County to begin farming in the Derby area. To this union two children were born.

Their son Michael was born while they were farming in the Derby area. In 1944, they bought a farm five miles southeast of Russell, where their daughter, JoAnn was born. Between 1964 and 1978, Ellsworth and Juanita were blessed with five grandchildren and Ellsworth was lovingly renamed Papa Elly. They shared 55 years of marriage before her death in 1997.

Ellsworth worked for D.L. Smith, Lucas County Produce, Stone Seed Store, but his joy was being a farmer. His Angus herd became well respected in the area. His farm was visited by the United States Secretary of Agriculture, Earl Benson, in the early 1950's. He was recognized for land conservation measures on his farm.

He served on the Lucas County Board of Education; was active in Lucas County 4-H, both as a member and leader; a director of the local FHA Board and was recently inducted into the Lucas County Cattlemen's Association Hall of Fame.

He is survived by son, Michael Dean Miller and his wife, Joyce of Russell, Iowa and daughter, JoAnn Miller Hoffman and husband, Rodney of Indianola, Iowa; five grandchildren, Kimberly Hoffman Brucker (Duane) of Gretna, NE, Brian Hoffman (Julie) of O'Fallon, MO, Jason Hoffman (Rachael) of Indianola, IA, Kelli Miller Spencer (Russ) and Joseph Miller of Russell, IA and twelve great-grandchildren.

He has one surviving sister, Naomi Miller Bennett (Loren) of Gresham, Oregon; sister-in-laws, Geraldine Atkinson, Lucille Kendall and Linda Kendall; brother-in-law, Dayton Kendall and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Nina and his wife, Juanita.
