Rose Kyle Evans

  • Birth 1760
  • Death 1812 Abbeville, Abbeville County, South Carolina, USA
  • Burial Abbeville, Abbeville County, South Carolina, USA
  • Memorial ID 42816996

She is shown as Rose Kyle in most DAR and family papers, though some descendants have her name as Rosa Kyle. According to her granddaughter, Augusta Evans Inge, she was Rose Kyle, daughter of Henry Kyle who came from Antrim, N. Ireland, to Pennsylvania then to Virginia and ultimately Abbeville, S.C. Rose Kyle Evans' daughter Sara Evans Russell also told her daughter that her mother was the daughter of Henry Evans who was born in Ireland but came to Abbeville County, South Carolina, with his brother James Kyle who died in York County, S.C. Some researchers refer to this Dr. James Kyle as Rev. Dr. James Kyle, who married Catherine or Kitty Hunter. Some family trees show Dr. James Kyle's parents as John Kyle (1688-1759) and wife Ann Fleming, Pennsylvania settlers from Ireland, and show John's great-great-grandfather as Patrick Kyle who married Agnes Stewart/Stuart, daughter of Esme Stuart, third Earl of Lenox, fourth-great-grandson of King Robert II of Scotland.

Genealogy of the Kyle, Coyle, Coil Families by Orville Kyle by Orville Kyle, p.50, says that Henry Kyle and his brother Dr. James Kyle arrived in Abbeville "just after the Revolution" from Lancaster Co., PA. or Maryland but doesn’t trace them further.

Mrs. Inge's brother Andrew Jackson Evans' daughter Hattie Rugg named her daughter in honor of her ancestor, and Rose Kyle Rugg married her second cousin, Mrs. Inge's grandson.

There is no marker in the cemetery but Rose Kyle Evans is presumed to be buried beside or near her husband James Evans. From the placement of the marker of her husband James Evans in relationship to that of his father Ezekiel Evans, whether accurately placed or not being unknown, it appears that her grave may be the space between James and Ezekiel Evans. Or, if hers is to the left of James rather than the right, then the grave between James and Ezekiel may hold his wife Jane Robinson Evans.

Birth date is uncertain and could be as late as 1765.
Death date is questionable. A family tree entitled "Tami's Family Bunch" by Tami Bunch, a descendant, gives the date 1812 and cites family trees on
Another family tree shows her death as 1832 while another says 1860. Most accounts say she predeceased her husband and he married a second wife, Jane. The death date may be found in the records of Upper Long Cane Church records which date back to the 1700s but have not been searched and have never been published.

Most references say there were 9 or 10 children, including 6 or 7 boys:
1. Joseph Evans (c1782 -1788) per some family trees (others say born c1782-88)
2. Llewellin Evans (born 1785-7 per some researchers. He was either the same Llewellen or nephew of the Llewellen Evans (6 OCT 1771-22 JAN 1842) m. Mary Harris
3. Ezekiel Evans (1788- ) (or 1798?)
4. John Evans (c1790?)
5. Mary Evans m. ___Lowry & died in childbirth
6. Samuel Robinson Evans (1794-1874) m. Mary Cowan
7. Robert Evans (1797-1857) m. Ann Smith
8. Sarah Evans (1802-1885) m. John Russell s/o Wm Russell & Griselle Houston, d/o Samuel Houston & Ann HAMILTON (dau of Andrew Hamilton & Jane McGill), descendant of the Leslies and Stewarts; if the Kyle lineage is correct, he was a 6th-cousin of his mother-in-law Rose Kyle Evans
9. James Evans (1803/5-1822)
10. Joseph Evans (c1806 -) m. Mary Gilmer (per some family trees)
11. Elizabeth “Betsy” Evans (1809-1863) m. James Wier (According to some charts online, there was a Betsy Evans c1782-87 who died young; if correct, then the younger Elizabeth “Betsy” was named for her. More likely, however, these charts are estimating her birthdate 1782-87)
