What is believed to be William Laycook's obituary was published in the Whig and Tribune, Jackson, Madison CO, TN on Saturday, January 24, 1874, p.1, under "STATE ITEMS," as follows:
"A Mr. Laycook, aged 93 years, died at Huntingdon, Dec. 31st. "

Mr. William Laycook is the only elderly Mr. Laycook who seems to fit the person described in the obituary, so this death date would be Dec. 31, 1873.

It appears that Mr. Laycock, nor his family knew his actual age.

William is shown in the 1850 Federal Census, Carroll CO, TN, 13th Civil District, as follows:
William Laycook, 64, farming, NC
Sarah, 58, NC
Elizabeth, 27, NC
Ruth A., 13, TN
John W., 11, TN

Daughter, Elizabeth, married Cyrus Wilson in Carroll CO, TN on Dec. 29, 1951.
William was living with his daughter, Elizabeth, her husband, Cyrus Wilson, and family in the 1860 Federal Census, 13th Civil District. William's age is given as "68" and birth location is shown as NC.

By the 1870 Federal Census, Carroll CO, TN, 12th Civil District, William is living in the home of his daughter Sarah, who married James Forbess in Carroll CO, TN on August 7, 1845. Sarah appears to have been widowed at this point, with several children in the home, as well as her farther, William Laycook whose age is shown as "87 years. He was a retired farmer, born in NC.

William Laycook is not found in the 1880 Federal Census.

The grave markers appear to have been placed at a much later date... and the dates seen on the monument seem to be inaccurate.
