John was the husband of Lucy Barnett and father of James Barnett. James bought the Farley lands and built a canal from the Smith River to power a grist mill and expanded its operations to include a saw mill. He sold his lands to his father, John. James moved away possibly to Kentucky and his burial location is unknown.

The mill and canal was later sold to John Morehead who built the textile mill complex and the area eventually grew into the town of Spray which is now Eden,N.C. The canal is still in use today producing electricty.

John Barnett sold part of the land to his nephew and son-in-law William Barnett, who is also buried in the Barnett Cemetery.
