Charles entered active service as a draftee on January 18, 1943 at Chicago, Illinois. He was selected for the Coast Artillery Corps. Completed basic training and qualified in the military occupational specialty of heavy truck driver (931).
He departed the continental United States on November 2, 1943 bound for the Pacific Theater of operations. Charles was assigned to and served with Headquarters Battery, 497th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion.
He earned thee Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal.
On January 13, 1946 Charles was honorably discharged as a Technician Fifth Grade at the Separation Ceneter, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.
