Charles Henry Webb was the son of William & Rachel Elizabeth Webb who arrived in Gilmer Co, GA ca 1854 from NC, along with William's parents, Benjamin & Mary (Wilson) Webb. Benjamin & Mary are listed in 1850 census of Yancey Co, NC, next door to daughter Rebecca & Isham D. Woodard. In 1860 census of Gilmer Co, the two Webb families were living only three houses apart. By 1870 census, Mary Wilson Webb had died; Benjamin Webb was in household of Isham D. & Rebecca (Webb) Woodard. The Wooward/woodard couple later moved to Arkansas. No legible tombstones have been found for either Benjamin or Mary Webb.

William & Elizabeth Webb had nine children:
1. John W. Webb, b ca 1845, NC
2. Thomas M. Webb, b ca 1847, NC
3. Larkin Z. Webb, b ca 1849, NC
4. Martin Webb, b ca 1851, NC
5. William G. Webb, b ca 1854, Gilmer Co, GA
6. Mary S. Webb, b 1856, Gilmer Co, GA
7. C. Henry Webb, b 1857, Gilmer Co, GA
8. David S. Webb, b 1859-60, Gilmer Co, GA
9. Sarah E. Webb, b 1861-62, Gilmer Co, GA

Gilmer Co records indicate that William Webb was a juror in the Feb 1855 Term of Court. He was also listed as a School Patron for the Leaches District #1035 in 1856.

On July 3, 1861, William Webb enlisted in Co D, 11th Regiment, CSA, Gilmer Co, GA. CSA records indicate that William Webb died of disease in General Hospital at Richmond, VA on Apr 30, 1862. Update: Burial site for William Webb found in Feb 2016!!

Also on Jul 3, 1861, John W. Webb enlisted in the same CSA Co as his father. John was wounded at 2nd Manassas, VA, on Aug 30, 1862. Appointed Corporal. Captured at Deep Bottom, VA on Aug 17, 1864. Took oath of allegiance to US Govt & released at Point Lookout, MD on joining US Service on Oct 16, 1864. He was back in Gilmer Co in 1870.

On Mar 16, 1864, young Thomas M. Webb enlisted in the same CSA Co. Thomas was sent to General Hospital on Apr 24, 1864, and died there. Exact date of death is unknown; however, Thomas is buried in the Confederate Cemetery at Charlottesville, VA (FAG Memorial #11372131).

In 1864, widowed Elizabeth Webb married B. B. Bradley (record not found). The 1870 census shows Mr. Bradley as age 60, Elizabeth as age 43. All seven of the younger Webb children are with them in 1870 census, along with two younger Bradley children ... Henrietta, b 1865; Alice, B 1868. The 1880 census lists this couple as Brown B. Bradley, age 74, & Rachel E. Bradley, age 53. With them are the three youngest Webb children (Henry, David, & Sarah, erroneously enumerated with surname of Bradley), as well as Henrietta & Alice Bradley. His age and earlier census data indicates that B. B. Bradley MAY be the Briant B. & Malinda Bradley (ages 44 & 42) with 8 children in 1850 Gilmer census. As result of Pickens Co being established in 1853, ALL of the Bradley families in 1850 Gilmer are in 1860 Pickens Co census. Briant & Malinda Bradley, ages 54 & 56, were Family #587. No legible tombstones have been found for B. B. Bradley, Malinda Bradley, or Rachel Elizabeth Webb Bradley.

A large number of Gilmer Co marriages were recorded with initials only for the men; couple this with inconsistencies in census data & errors in deciphering old handwriting ... it is often extremely difficult to accurately identify the individuals and WHO married WHO! The marriage record of Henry Webb & Mary Harper on Mar 1, 1883 in Gilmer Co; Bk 3, Pg 194, showed his name as "C. N. Webb."

In 1900 census, he is listed as "Charles K. Webb, age 42", with wife (Mary C., age 35); they have been married for 17 years, and have seven children (2 sons, followed by 5 daughters).

Gilmer County history refers to the "Henry Webb place" as being southwest of Ellijay. In 1911, a new rural post office was established in that area and given the name of "Webb." Since these "post offices" were usually in the homes of the postmasters, the new postmaster chose the name ... was Henry Webb that new postmaster?? After an unknown period of time, the Webb post office was "moved & renamed" as Ella Gap. The Webb/Ella Gap post office was permanently closed in 1945.

Of the nine Webb children & the two half-sisters, only five are known to be buried in Gilmer Co ... C. Henry Webb; Mary S. Webb Davis (#58066743); Sarah E. Webb Withrow (#58066741); Dora Henrietta Bradley Foster (#58066672) and Alice Bradley (#256668720).

The other Webb burials at Liberty Baptist are probably descendants of Henry & Mary Harper Webb.
