He first studied at UNC Chapel Hill in 1870 until the suspension of that institution following the end of the Civil War. He then went to Wake Forest College which had been founded by his Grandfather, John Purefoy. His Uncle, Rev. James Simpson Purefoy, was a trustee of Wake Forest College. He graduated from Wake Forest in 1874 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He finished his medical education at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from which he graduated in 1876.
Dr. Purefoy was a medical doctor with a practice in Asheville, North Carolina. His home was on Charlotte Street behind the old Mission Hospital downtown. His home was demolished to make way for the building of the downtown expressway, I-240.
