Death of Mrs. Mayo
This Estimable Lady Passes Away Sunday After A Painful Illness
Grandniece of Commodore Decatur

Her Death a Shock and Source of Grief to Her Many Warm Friends and Admirers

At 11:43 o’clock Sunday forenoon Mrs. Maria Mayo, wife of Hon. Mayor W. R. Mayo, passed away after nine months suffering, borne with patience and fortitude that was little less than heroic. The news of her death was received by her many friends with expressions of the deepest regret and grief, coupled with universal sympathy for the bereaved husband.
The illness which finally resulted in death of this estimable lady, first attacked her last summer, when she suffered a great deal with inflammation of the side. She was seized with a severe attack on Saturday before last, May 8th, and on Tuesday symptoms of appendicitis developed. On Wednesday she was removed to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where an operation was performed and the appendix removed. It was considered most successful and the patient recovered to an extent which justified the hope that she would conquer the dread foe, but on Saturday night the inflammation, which had troubled her for so long, began to harass her and notwithstanding the best attention that science could give, her life could not be saved.
Her death was as beautiful as her life had been-quiet, peaceful and in the hope of a heaven which she had won by a beautiful Christian life. She recognized the members of the family who were with her when she died.
She leaves her mother, husband and three children-Decatur and Wyndham, young men and a daughter, Marie aged 14 years.
The funeral will take place at 10 o’clock today from Christ P. E. Church and will be conducted by the rector, Rev. O. S. Barten, D. D., assisted by Rev. B. D. Tucker, D. D., of St. Paul’s and Rev. A. S. Lloyd, of St. Luke’s.
The deceased lady was a grandniece of the famous Commodore Decatur, the hero of the early American navy, being the daughter of his nephew, Captain Stephen Decatur. She was married to Captain Mayo twenty-three years ago. She was loved by all for her grace, beauty and womanly sweetness, and her place in Norfolk society cannot be filled.
